As a young man Richard Joyce is said to have been captured by pirates and sold into slavery to a rich Turkish goldsmith. Joyce learned the trade of goldsmithing and eventually earned his freedom. When he returned to Ireland and the love he left behind he created the Claddagh Ring. Over the years the Claddagh has become one of the most enduring symbols of Ireland.
